The Reverend Phillip Thraikill was appointed by Bishop Roy Clark at the 1984 session of the South Carolina Annual Conference to plant a church in northeast Columbia between I-77 and I-20. Phil and his wife Lori worked with the support of several local UMC churches and many lay persons to establish Northeast United Methodist Church.
The first worship service was held at Spring Valley High School on September 30, 1984. In 1992, the Reverend Marshall “Jack” Meadows formally chartered the congregation during the July 28, 1985 worship service. The congregation began with 82 adult charter members and 33 baptized members under age 16.
Ground was broken for our current campus on Christmas Eve of 1988 and the first on-campus service was held on October 1st, 1989. In 2000, the Education Building was completed.
Today, Northeast is home to a diverse congregation and hosts several different events and programs, while providing services and support to our local community.
